About the event

Born in January 1876, adventurer, journalist, and prolific author, Jack London, visited the city which bears his surname in the summer of 1902. Posing as a homeless sailor he immersed himself into London's shameful underbelly of poverty and inequality, at a time when huge amounts of public money were being spent on the impending coronation of King Edward VII. A year later his vivid first hand experiences amongst the poor and destitute were published in Britain in his seminal social study 'The People of the Abyss'.
