About the event
Join Lambeth Tour Guides for a walk which explores Vauxhall's historic connections with outdoor formal entertainment: a place where, for almost 200 years, Londoners could dance the night away.
Roll up for performances of the tightrope-walking Madam Saqui; be thrilled by the fireworks displays; gasp at the daring balloon ascents; wine and dine with the accompaniment of a live orchestra. Musical connections of note include Handel, Mozart’s first Susanna and one half of the Gilbert and Sullivan partnership.
Discover the two sides to the man behind the 18th century Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, Jonathan Tyers, and learn about the origins of a distinctive South London form of perambulation, later a stage show and film. Finally, of course, a nod to the area's most famous son, actor, producer, all-round entertainer, Charlie Chaplin.
The legacy of outdoor activity continues with today's pastimes, represented in the vibrant range currently on offer, from outdoor film and karaoke, sport and fitness, not forgetting tea-drinking, and theatre.
Meet at the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens entrance pillars at 372 Kennington Lane, next to Royal Vauxhall Tavern SE11 5AW.
The tour ends at the Garden Museum, 5 Lambeth Palace Road, SE1 7LB
Please note, the route includes some narrow and uneven paving.
