About the event

Starting and ending with Churches designed by Victorian Gothic architect GE Street this route explores the changing landscape of mid 19th century South London, starting at Herne Hill, moving to Street’s childhood home and site of his school in Camberwell, before finishing in Kennington at Grade 1 listed St John the Divine. Along the way we'll see work by Street’s one time employer George Gilbert Scott as well as reminders of semi rural landscape of the area before the suburban development that created opportunities for Street and his fellow nineteenth century architects.

George Edmund Street was born in Woodford, Essex and moved to Camberwell in 1830. He was drawn to medieval churches and after an initial apprenticeship joined the office of George Gilbert Scott. He swiftly developed his own practice and worked in Oxford becoming Diocesan Architect in 1850.

He left a huge output of ecclesiastical work at his death…
